Thriller is a genre that is used in literature, film and television to create suspense, tension and excitement. The sub genres include crime, mystery and psychological thrillers. In the mid 60's thriller films became increasingly popular. The genre of thriller is very similar to crime and horror because they share the elements of suspense, tension and excitement.
One of the main elements of thriller genre is give the audience an adrenaline rush and to keep them on the 'edge of their seats'. Tension can be built up in many different ways, many of them based on the character and the scene for example, a character trapped in a room with no possible way out. The atmosphere of a thriller film can be effected by the lighting and sound. The lighting can be effected by making it more dull and dark to create tension because the audience may not know what could jump out. The sound could be effected by making it slower and more erey. It could also be more high pitched and more faster and points to give the audience more adrenaline. Common plots with thriller include kidnapping, murder, knife crime and many more.
Overall the thriller genre is there to create suspense for the audience. It's there to keep them watching and so they don't know what will happen next. This is cleverly done through the use of mise-en-scene, lighting and sound.
